Suffering and art

Whether we admit it or not…artists, we sorta buy into the idea that suffering is needed for good art. We may even start to think that we should be depressed and tortured, so our art will be better.

It’s a lie. Good art comes from being honest about your life. Depressed or happy, a genuine life yields genuine art.

In fact, while depression conveyed in art can be compelling, maybe the overcoming of a struggle conveyed in art is more poignant. If life is anything like the movies, we might actually get more satisfaction from seeing the suffering, struggling character find peace and happiness than a miserable character that stay miserable.
